Lyrics

I heard a friend of mine had died, of whom I had not seen in years;
In my soul I know I cried, although I never shed those tears.
And it takes me back to a late summer county fair;
She looked so fine when I saw her standing there.

And I was just nineteen years old, playing up a fool;
And she was barely seventeen - a senior in high school.
So I asked her if she’d like to go and see a show;
The night ran long; I felt awkward, dumb, and slow...

I guess I’ve gone and opened up my old Memory Box...
I’m going to thumb through all the pages in the diary of my thoughts.
I’m going to leave today behind; go back and see what I can find; (fall riff)
And say hello to a dear old friend of mine.

Now the romance wasn’t there; we just could not find a match.
But, we found we made good friends - so we held on to that.
And she was the kind who spoke her mind about her view...
And I had no doubt that what she said to me was true.

Now I was probably twenty-two last time I saw her smile;
We grew apart like people do and the days turned into miles.
We all move on and we pursue our separate lives...
We finish school, we become husbands, become wives.

I guess I’ve gone and opened up my old Memory Box...
I’m going to thumb through all the pages in the diary of my thoughts.
I’m going to leave today behind; go back and see what I can find; (fall riff)
And say hello to a dear old friend of mine.

I find myself in thought about the little girl she had...
Does she wonder about her mom and why her daddy seems so sad?
It seems a shame someone so young would have to go;
But I know for sure that the angels took her Home

To the place she longed for most; although He took her unawares...
The journey to her Father’s house, for this I know she was prepared.
I guess I wish I could have seen her one last time.
Someday I will in a Paradise so fine...

I guess I’ve gone and opened up my old Memory Box...
I’m going to thumb through all the pages in the diary of my thoughts.
I’m going to leave today behind; go back and see what I can find; (fall riff)
And say hello to a dear old friend of mine.
